Broncos Blank RedHawks in 1-0 Road Win

OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team got back to its winning ways after a 1-0 shutout at Miami on Sunday afternoon.

Alyssa Burke scored her first goal of the season, while Stephanie Heber made four saves to record the team's seventh shutout of the season. The Broncos (8-4-1, 3-2-1 MAC) outshot the RedHawks 15-10 overall and had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.

"To go on the road and get a win is great for us," said head coach Lauren Sinacola. "We are really starting to come together and do some great things. Today the team took everything we worked on leading up to this game and brought it to life. We look forward to growing from this outing and return home to get ready for the next one."

The lone goal came early in the match in the 18th minute.  Alyssa Smith had it on the left side and passed it into the box. Alex Ruffer dummied the ball and let it go past her to Burke, who one-timed it into the net to take a 1-0 lead.

Burke led the way with four total shots, landing three on goal, for WMU. The Broncos kept the attack on, putting five shots on frame in the second half but Miami goalkeeper Patricia Koutoulas managed to keep it just a one-goal game with six saves.

Western Michigan returns home to host Ohio on Friday at 4 p.m. and then hosts Kent State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of Sunday's match the team will take time to honor its seven-member senior class.
