KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team suffered its first defeat at home this season after falling to Mid-American Conference East Division leaders Bowling Green, 3-1 (20-25, 19-25, 26-24, 16-25) on Saturday night.
Quiana Ware, Rachel Bontrager, Olivia Kofie and Sydney LeMay all had double-digit kills on the night, led by Ware's 13. Bontrager added 17 digs for a double-double, while Mary Murphy also had a double-double with a match high 41 assists and 11 digs. BGSU held the Broncos (14-9, 7-5 MACA to a .130 hitting percentage and WMU recorded 31 attack errors in the match.
The first set opened up with the teams trading points until a 6-6 tie after a kill by LeMay. BGSU opened the set up with a 6-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. WMU was trailing 16-12 and went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-16 lead but the Falcons battled back to tie it up at 19-19. The teams traded points to bring the score to 20-20, but Bowling Green finished off the set on a 5-0 run.
Western Michigan took an early 10-7 lead in the second set after a 5-0 run and extended it to 12-9. BGSU battled back and tied it up at 17-17 after a WMU attack error. The Falcons then went on an 8-2 run to close out the set.
Bowling Green jumped out to an 11-5 lead to open the third set. WMU went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead down to 12-11. From there the Broncos stayed with the Falcons and finally took a 19-18 lead after a kill by Bontrager. WMU maintained the lead until a late 2-0 run by BGSU to tie it up at 24-24. A kill by Cassandra Smigiel gave the Broncos their second set-point of the match and an attack error on the Falcons finished it off for WMU.
Bowling Green took an early 10-6 lead and Western Michigan didn't catch up. The Broncos got within four at 16-12, but the Falcons pushed the lead and won the set 25-16.
