KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Dawson DiPietro scored his first two collegiate goals and Ben Blacker made 32 saves as Western Michigan battled No. 15 Clarkson to a 2-2 tie at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.
Hugh McGing also scored in the exhibition 3-on-3 overtime for WMU.
The Broncos (2-1-1) jumped out to a very early 1-0 lead on DiPietro's first collegiate goal just 1:33 into the first period. Colt Conrad played the puck to DiPietro and the sophomore ripped a shot on net from the right circle. Clarkson goalie Jake Kielly made the initial save but the puck bounced next to him and he moved his pad, pushing it into the net.
Clarkson answered early in the second period at 2:03 on a goal by Sheldon Rempal. WMU's defense was caught in an odd-man rush and Devin Brosseau found Rempal alone in the right circle for the one-timer, tying it up at 1-1.
The Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead at 7:21 in the second period with Brosseau lighting the lamp. Nico Strum found him in the right circle and he put the puck under the bar for his first goal of the season.
DiPietro tied it up at 2-2 with his second of the night at 10:52 in the second period. On the power play, Ethen Frank put a shot on net from the right circle. Kielly made the save but the rebound bounced to the back door and DiPietro punched it in. Frank picked up his first collegiate assist, while Jade McMullen tallied his second helper of the season.
The two teams battled in the third period, with Clarkson firing off 12 of its 34 shots. WMU had 10 shots on goal in the final full period. In overtime the Golden Knights kept the pressure on, but Blacker made four saves, including one on a power play, to earn the tie.
Overall Clarkson outshot Western Michigan 34-31 on the night, with the Broncos blocking 14 shots. WMU's power play finished 1-for-8, while its penalty kill unit went 4-for-5.
The two teams battle it out again on Saturday night at 8:05 p.m. The game can be seen live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network, joined in progress after the WMU football game.
