KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell to No. 15 Clarkson, 4-2, in front of 3,511 fans at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
WMU picked up goals from Dawson DiPietro and Cam Lee on the night, but the Golden Knights put four on the board despite being outshot 37-20. CU goalie Jake Kielly made a game-high 35 saves.
Clarkson took an early 1-0 lead just 2:51 into the first period on the first of two goals by Sheldon Rempal. Rempal's goal from the right circle was set up by Nico Strum and Devin Brosseau.
WMU responded early in the second period on a power play goal by DiPietro at 2:39. DiPietro got the puck from Wade Allison in the slot and ripped it past Kielly for his third goal of the season. Colt Conrad also picked up an assist on the goal.
Rempal added his second of the night at 7:46 in the second period to retake the lead, 2-1. Aaron Thow found Rempall at the Bronco blue line and a defenseman tripped over a loose stick, clearing a path for Rempball to beat WMU goalie Ben Blacker.
Terrance Amorosa made it 3-1 at 16:12 of the second period on a power play goal. Western Michigan captain Scott Moldenhauer was called for interference and on the opening draw Strum won it back to Kelly Summers. Summers then passed it on to Amorosa at the deep slot and he fired it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
WMU cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal by Cam Lee late in the third period at 16:05. Allison had the puck behind the net and found Lee in the slot and he ripped it in for his third goal of the season. Conrad also tallied an assist on the goal.
Strum added an empty-net goal with two seconds left on the clock to seal the win for Clarkson.
