CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Western Michigan volleyball team faced some tough competition and wrapped up the Saluki Invitational on Saturday evening.
WMU competed hard but opened the tournament with a 3-1 (20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25) loss to Northern Arizona on Friday evening. On Saturday they dropped matches to the host Salukis and Central Florida, both 3-0.
Against NAU
Olivia Kofie had a season-best 16 kills to lead the Broncos and also finished with a .371 hitting percentage. Senior
Alysia Baznik picked up her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and a career-high 25 digs.
Sydney LeMay also finished with double-digit kills, recording 10 on the night. Freshman libero
Kathleen Reilly set a new career high with 25 digs. The Broncos dropped the first two sets but battled back in the third to win 25-21. WMU kept it close in the fourth set but was unable to force a fifth.
Against SIU LeMay led the team with 12 kills, while freshman
Kate Carey had eight. Baznik recorded another double-double, but this time it was assists and digs. She had 16 assists to go with 10 digs and also nearly recorded a triple-double with seven kills. WMU was able to keep it close in all three sets, falling 25-19, 25-19 and 25-20.
LeMay also led the way against UCF, recording nine kills with a .300 hitting percentage. The Broncos came closest in the first set, that featured 10 ties and three lead changes but the Golden Knights prevailed 25-23. Central Florida then won the next two sets 25-9 and 25-17 to finish off the match.
Western Michigan returns home to host a tournament of its own, welcoming Tennessee, Milwaukee and Xavier to Kalamazoo for the Holiday Inn West Invitational.
