SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan volleyball team split with Seton Hall and Notre Dame on the final day of the Golden Dome Invitational on Saturday. WMU defeated SHU 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20) and fell to the host Fighting Irish 0-3 (15-25, 27-29, 16-25).
In the morning match the Broncos made quick work of the Pirates in the three-set sweep.
Kate Carey,
Olivia Kofie and
Sydney LeMay all earned double-digit kills. Kofie led the way with 11, while Carey and LeMay each had 10. For Carey it was her first time reaching double-digit kills in just her second collegiate game. Carey and LeMay both had hitting percentages above .400 with LeMay leading the way at .44 (10-2-18).
Alysia Baznik finished just two kills shy of her second double-double of the weekend, finishing with a team-best 15 digs to go with her eight kills.
Mary Murphy finished the match with 40 assists.
The Broncos took the first set in a close battle 25-23 but followed it up with a 25-18 win. In the final set the two teams went back-and-forth early on before WMU took control with LeMay recording five kills in the set.
"We started out the match with energy and played with confidence throughout each set," said head coach
Colleen Munson. "Seton Hall is a very good team, played scrappy defense and made us earn every point."
The Broncos ran into a Notre Dame team that was riding a four-set winning streak after sweeping Cleveland State earlier in the day and a carry-over set from its win over Seton Hall on Friday night. Western Michigan was unable to end that streak but came close in the second set, ultimately falling 29-27. LeMay had a match-high 15 kills, while Kofie once again reached double-digits at 10. Both were named to the Golden Dome Invitational All-Tournament team.
Western Michigan hosts Fort Wayne on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for its regular-season home-opener.
