HUNTINGTON, W.V. -- The Western Michigan men's soccer team netted two second-half goals to down Marshall on the road on Friday night to open the 2016 regular season.
Â
Brandon Bye and
Diego Lopez each tallied their first goals of the season, while the Broncos dominated possession by holding Marshall to zero shots.
Â
"Today we were fantastic defensively, not allowing a shot on goal or at goal," said head coach
Chad Wiseman. "We were committed for the entire 90 minutes, all 11 players on the field at any given time."
Â
After a scoreless first half WMU didn't waste time taking the lead with Bye's goal coming in the 52nd minute.
Nathan Hoover played a ball into Bye and the talented junior put the ball between a defender's legs before slotting it into the net.
Â
"Bye stepped up and made some big plays," Wiseman added. "He took his goal well, which he was working very hard in that area."
Â
Bye wasn't done, he set up Lopez in the 72nd minute to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead. Bye flicked it on to Lopez, who was making an overlapping run. The senior midfielder found himself on a breakaway and curled it into the left corner of the net for his first goal as a Bronco.
Â
"I'm very pleased with the result," concluded Wiseman. "Marshall was a runner-up in Conference USA last year and it's a team that knows how to keep games close and pick and choose their times to take chances."
Â
Western Michigan now makes the trek to Dayton to take on the Flyers on Sunday at 3 p.m.
