DAYTON, Ohio -- Brandon Bye scored his second goal of the season as the Western Michigan men's soccer team continued its strong start to the season after a 2-0 win at Dayton on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Bye netted his game-winner in the fifth minute, while the Bronco defense once again clamped down on its opponent by only allowing five total shots.
Dzenan Nezirevic added a late insurance goal for the team's second-straight shutout win. WMU
Drew Shepherd goalkeeper made three saves.
Â
"What an unbelievable opening weekend for the guys," said head coach
Chad Wiseman. "Two road wins in very difficult conditions. Very happy for the guys, they deserved both results."
Â
Bye gave the Broncos a very early lead with a thunderous strike from 25-yards out.
Nathan Hoover and
Jay McIntosh both picked up assists on the goal.
Â
WMU dominated play for the second-straight game and was able to do so in rough field conditions due to weather.
Â
"Today our leadership was absolutely spot on," Wiseman added. "The field conditions played a major roll in how the game was going to be played. Zach Boch made sure that everyone stood that."
Â
Western Michigan took the 1-0 lead into the half and outshot the Flyers 7-1 in the first 45 minutes.
Â
The Broncos kept up the pressure and Nezerievic broke through in the 83rd minute when he banged in a rebound on a shot by Bye for his first goal of the season.
Â
Western Michigan finished with a 15-5 edge in total shots and a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
The Broncos host Fort Wayne on Friday at 5 p.m. for their regular-season home opener on Kingdom Soccer Club Day. They also host IUPUI on Monday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
