KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team officially opened the 2016 regular season in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 overtime win over Fort Wayne at the WMU Soccer Complex late Friday afternoon.

Candice Uhl netted the game-winning goal just 93 seconds into overtime after Alex Ruffer tied the game for the Broncos to force the extra period with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. WMU head coach Lauren Sinacola earned her first career win with the result.

"In the last 15 minutes we really turned up the pressure and knew it would come," said Sincola. "We just had to keep our cool while we were waiting."

Fort Wayne struck first in the 25th minute after Kallianne Mogler set up Chloe Foor in the right-side of the box. Foor poked the ball past WMU keeper Stephanie Heber for the 1-0 lead.

Western Michigan turned up the pressure in the second half and finally broke through with just 5:01 left in regulation. Uhl took the ball down the right flank and into the box, crossing it to the center. Ruffer took a shot on her first touch and it deflect off of a Mastodon defender and into the net to square the game at 1-1.

The overtime period didn't last long as Uhl's goal came just 93 seconds into the extra period. Ruffer had the ball on the left flank and cut in towards goal. Down towards the goal line the junior forward cut back and found Uhl at the back post for the tap-in game-winner.

The Broncos outshot the Mastodons 16-7, with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Western Michigan is back in action on Sunday at Indiana at 1 p.m.
