Broncos Battle Jaguars to 2-2 Tie

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team opened up the 2016 season with a 2-2 draw at IUPUI on Friday evening.

The Broncos dominated the stats but had to come from behind with Tiffany Buckler netting the game-tying goal in the 54th minute. WMU outshot the Jaguars 22-7  on the day, landing 11 on goal.

"It was really good seeing the team compete against someone other than themselves," said head coach Lauren Sinacola. "We saw a lot of great things from new faces stepping into new roles. We can take a lot from this outing, things we need to sharpen up, things we did extremely well, and things we can keep building off of. Thought the result wasn't ideal, the experience for the group is very beneficial and I'm excited to get to Kalamazoo and move forward!"

IUPUI took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the ninth minute. Catherine Raster fired a shot that deflected off a Bronco defender and into the net.

Western Michigan responded with a goal in the 25h minute by Emma Kahn. Freshman Savannah Bosworth played a cross to Kahn and last year's leading goal-scorer punched it into the net.

The Jaguars struck again just after half time in the 51st minute and once again it was Raster scoring for IUPUI. This time it was a hard strike from the right side off a pass from Krissy Kirkhoff.

The lead didn't last long as Bucker tied it up at 2-2 in the 54th minute after clanking one off the left post from the top of the 18-yard box and into the net.

The two teams battled it out for the remaining 36 minutes but neither squad scored. No overtime was played due to the exhibition.

Two goalkeepers saw action for the Broncos with Stephanie Heber and Mackenzie Larson each playing 45 minutes. Heber started and made three saves, while Larson made one save on the day.

Western Michigan opens up the regular season on Friday, Aug. 19 when it hosts Fort Wayne at 4 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
