KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan men's tennis player Daniel Loebel was named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Male Scholar Athlete of the Week the conference office announced this week.
Loebel, a junior with a 4.00 GPA in finance, is a Hamburg, Germany native. Loebel was a huge part of the Broncos claiming their 11th MAC Tournament Title and sending the team to the NCAA Tournament. He went 2-0 and was the first singles match done in each of the teams two matches this weekend in DeKalb, Ill. First, Loebel defeated Valentin Bouchet of Binghamton 6-4, 6-4 on Friday, April 29 to put the Broncos up 2-0 at the time and then beat Conner Anderson of Ball State in the MAC Tournament championship 6-1, 6-3. He improved his overall record to 26-10 and has won three straight matches on his way to being named to the MAC All-Tournament team.
This is the fourth time a WMU men's tennis player has claimed this award. Loebel has won it twice, senior Ruben Greiner has won it twice and junior Matt Hamilton has won it twice.
WMU will head to Champaign, Ill. on Friday, May 13 with a matchup against No. 15 seeded Illinois in the NCAA Regionals. Follow the Broncos on Twitter @WMUMensTennis for all updates about the team!
