KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team heads to Terre Haute, Ind., for the 2016 Gibson Invitational hosted by Indiana State on Friday and Saturday.
The Broncos will be tested in a large field that includes the host Sycamores, Bradley, Central Michigan, Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, Loyola, Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, Bowling Green, Missouri State and Northern Illinois.
WMU competes in just three events on Friday, the 5,000-meter run, the hammer throw and the discus. The bulk of the action takes place on Saturday.
Western Michigan is coming off its lone home meet of the season and have competed in just two meets so far this outdoor season.
"The people on the track are really doing a good job so far," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "We have to get a couple of key people healthy, though. Surprisingly a lot of people ran better at our meet in the cold than in the good weather down in Houston."
"Field events were better last weekend. We're not where we need to be but they are getting better. We are making strides. I think some of the freshmen are more comfortable with the outdoor season because it's what they're more familiar with."
One of those youngsters is freshman Riley Wilhelm. Wilhelm won the discus at the Bronco Classic after throwing 42.36m (139') and also took third in the shot put.
Lycan also saw improved marks in the sprints, despite the cold weather during the Bronco Classic. He'd like to see more of the same at Indiana State.
"I'd like to see some progression," Lycan added. "I'd like to see the jumpers get more consistent with their approaches. Be competitive, be aggressive in our races. Execution is important in the field events. Being able to do what they do in practice out in the meet."
