Broncos Late Offensive Surge Not Enough Against Butler

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Western Michigan Baseball team's offense came alive late, but it was too late to erase an early deficit as the Broncos fell to Butler 7-3 Sunday afternoon at the Bulldogs home field.

The Broncos fall to 7-14 overall but have still won six of the past eight after going 2-2 over the weekend.

Butler jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring both runs with the help of a Bronco error. The Bulldogs started the inning with a walk and a hit batsman and also had a single. Butler added onto the lead with two runs in the fourth inning, one run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning. Kyle Mallwitz entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning and was able to force a double play right out of the bullpen, but two runs came across in the inning.

WMU ended the game with three unanswered runs including one in the seventh inning and two in the eighth inning. In the seventh, freshman Conner Henderson clobbered a solo home run to right field to make it 7-1 Butler. In the eighth inning, Drew Farmer hit a one-out bunt single and Grant Miller reached base on a fielder's choice. Evan Nelson then drilled a two-run home run to right field to score Miller, Nelson's second home run in the last two games after he hit a grand slams in Saturday's game against Bradley to put the Broncos up 5-2 after trailing 2-1 at the time.

Nelson finished 2-for-4 with two RBI on the home run while Henderson went 1-for-2 with a solo home run. Nick Vogelmeier, Farmer, Hunter Prince and Jesse Forestell all added a hit in the game. Miller lost a 19-game hit streak as he finished 0-for-4; the fourth longest hit streak in WMU history. Ryan McMillin and Chris Lewis have the record with 25 games.

Sophomore Tanner Allison suffered the loss, going 3.0 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with one strikeout. Freshman Matt McConnell entered to throw a perfect 2.1 innings to end the game with one strikeout.

WMU has a quick turnaround with an away game at Chicago State on Tuesday, March 29 with game time scheduled for 3 p.m. Follow the Broncos on Twitter @WMUBaseball for all updates about the team!
