KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team moved even in the Mid-American Conference this season at 1-1 with a 6-1 win over Bowling Green Sunday afternoon at Sorensen Courts.
“We played pretty well for playing outdoors in March, that will help us moving forward,” head coach Ryan Tomlinson said. “I thought No. 2 doubles (Barbare Eristavi/Katja Fevralev) did a nice job of bouncing back and clinching the doubles point today. Then when Meika Ashby and Denise Azcui put points on the board early it helped the momentum of the match in our favor.”
Ashby and Azcui earned a quick 6-1 win at No. 3 to put the Broncos (12-6, 1-1 MAC) one point away from claiming the doubles point. After the Falcons (2-13, 0-2 MAC) won 6-4 at No. 1, Eristavi and Fevralev battled back to win 6-4 at No. 2 to clinch the point and put WMU up 1-0.
In singles play, Azcui and Ashby again made quick work of their opponents, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6, respectively. Azcui improved to 17-9 and extended her match winning streak to six. With the Broncos up 3-0, junior Tracy Kuhle clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 to become the first member of the team to hit 20 wins this season while also winning her fourth straight.. After the Broncos clinched the win, Eristavi won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 and Fevralev won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4.
WMU is action next weekend starting on the road against Buffalo on Friday, April 1 at 1 p.m. and finishing the weekend at Akron on Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
