HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened its 2025-26 season at the Hope College Fall Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Broncos went a combined 23-3 in singles and 11-1 in doubles, with the only losses occurring to their teammates.
SINGLES
All singles matches were played as one set to eight games.
Graduate student
Lola Glantz went 3-0 to win the Singles A Draw. She opened with a win over Calvin College's Marina Ribeiro, 8-1, in the quarterfinals after a first round bye. She then defeated Hope's Hadley Krygier 8-0 in the semifinals. Glantz was pitted against teammate and sophomore
Sienna Osborne in the finals. Osborne's path to the finals started with an 8-0 win over Kalamazoo College's Addison Lyons in the quarterfinals after receiving an opening-round bye. She then defeated HC's Amanda Lopykinski, 8-1, in the semifinals. Glantz bested her teammate, 8-2, in the finals.
In the Singles B Draw it was another two Broncos meeting in the finals. Sophomore
Frida Weijerman had an opening round draw and then defeated Spring Arbor's Dayra Novella, 8-3) in the quarterfinals and Ohio Northern's Jamie Hurst, 8-2, in the semifinals. Graduate student
Polina Khotko also had a bye, then besting John Carroll's Madelin Kavenagh, 8-5, in the quarterfinals and ONU's Abby Cruser in the semifinals, 8-0. Khotko picked up the win in the draw after Weijerman was forced to withdraw due to injury.
The Singles C Draw went to WMU freshmen
Ayana Yaguchi over teammate and senior
Audrey Smitek, 8-2. While Smitek had an opening-round bye, Yaguchi made her collegiate debut with an 8-0 win over Roosevelet's Nathalie Ramazzini, 8-0. Yaguchi then picked up wins over Hope's Amolia Rossow, 8-2, and SAU's Lilah Dean, 8-3. Smitek advanced with wins over Ohio Northern's Amy Grace Beebe, 8-2, and Saint Mary's Evelyn Demblans-Dechans, 8-2.
Sophomore
Marielou Baudouin swept through Singles D Draw, going 3-0 after wins of 8-5, 8-1, and 8-1 in the final against HC's Sophia Grzesiak. Freshman
Xingtong Jiang also swept the Singles E Draw, going 4-0 with wins of 8-3, 8-3, 8-2, and 8-4 over JCU's Felicity Kolb in the finals.
DOUBLES
The Doubles A Draw final featured Osborne and Khotko against Glantz and Yaguchi, with Glantz and Yaguchi earning the 6-4 win. Osborne and Khotko started their run to the finals with a quarterfinals win over Emma Kealy and Shannon Dudy from Saint Mary's College, 6-2. The duo then dispatched Ohio Northern's Jenna Bell and Abby Cruser, 6-0. Glantz and Yaguchi opened things up with a 6-0 win in the quarterfinals against RU's Zeynep Barut and Nathalie Ramazzini and a 6-3 win against Hope's Krygier and Amanda Lopykinski.
Baudouin and Weierjman won the Doubles B Draw, opening things with a 6-0 win over KC's Maya Lee and Peja Liles in the quarterfinals. They then defeated SMC's Sophia Pischalko and Demblans-Dechans, 6-1, in the semifinals before a 6-3 win over Roosevelt's Ximena Mercado and Esther Magnusson in the finals.
Smitek and Jiang gave the Broncos the win in Doubles C Draw. The pair opened with a 6-0 quarterfinals win over Grace Sweet and Betta Klein from Kalamazoo Colleg. They then picked up a 6-1 win in the semifinals over RU's Sophie Christie and Lara Sener. The duo picked up the draw win, 6-0, over Northern Ohio's Leah Schleibaum and Molly McLane.
Western Michigan returns to action Oct. 3-5 when it hosts the 2025 MAC Fall Individual Championships. Admission to the tournament is free all weekend long.
