BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team split a pair of matches against Indiana and Morehead State on IU's campus Saturday. First, the Broncos fell to the No. 55 ranked Hoosiers 5-2 then picked up a quick 4-0 win over Morehead State later in the day.
The Broncos move to 5-3 this season with all three losses coming against nationally-ranked opponents in Indiana, Notre Dame and Tennessee.
Against the Hoosiers, the Broncos were able to claim the doubles point as the duo of junior Barbare Eristavi and freshman Katja Fevralev earned a 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot to give the Boncos a good start. The team of freshman Melina Lyubomirova and sophomore Olivia Myers then topped Schmider/Whalen 7-5 in the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Fevralev was the lone Bronco to earn a win as she beat Kim Schmider 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 4 spot to improve to 13-3, tying Lyubomirova for the team lead in wins at the time.
Against the Eagles, Myers/Azcui earned a 6-0 win in the No. 3 spot and Lyubomirova/Kuhle earned a 6-1 win in the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point. In singles, Lyubomirova earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 spot to take back her spot as the teams leader in wins with 14. Meika Ashby (No. 4) and Eristavi both earned wins to help the Broncos complete the shutout.
