KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team will look to rebound from its first loss of the dual match season with a pair of matches this weekend. First the Broncos will battle Big Ten foe Iowa on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. and then will take on Drake on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. with both matches coming on the road.
The Broncos are 4-1 this season and are coming off a split last weekend against two Horizon League opponents in Green Bay and Valparaiso. The Broncos topped the Phoenix 6-1 before losing 5-2 to the Crusaders later in the weekend.
The Hawkeyes will come into Friday with a 1-1 record but will play SIU-Edwardsville in match before the Broncos. The Bulldogs will come into Sunday at 1-3 overall with a win over Indiana. The Broncos trail 18-14 in the all-time series with the Hawkeyes and also trail 2-0 against the Bulldogs.
In last weekend's matches with Green Bay and Valpo, senior Ruben Greiner and junior Daniel Loebel each earned a pair of wins in singles play and went 2-0 together as doubles partners. Against Green Bay, sophomore Maik Steiner (No. 2), junior Matt Hamilton (No. 3) and freshman Matej Svjetlicic all earned wins in singles play. Svjetlicic leads the team with a 19-4 overall record while Hamilton is 13-4, Loebel is 13-6 (5-0 this spring) and Steiner is 11-8. In doubles play, Hamilton/Steiner lead the team with a 13-3 record together while Greiner/Loebel are 9-2 together and 5-0 this spring.
Loebel was named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for his efforts last week. It's marks the second week in a row a WMU men's tennis player won the prestigious award after Hamilton won it last week.
