SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis faced a tough test in No. 31 Notre Dame on the road Sunday night. The Fighting Irish came away with a 4-0 win over the Broncos to drop WMU to 8-4 overall this season and snap their four-match winning streak while ND improved to 6-5.
The Fighting Irish claimed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead and took three singles matches in a row in the No. 2, No. 1 and No. 4 spots. Sophomore Jefta Kecic faced No. 51 Quentin Monghan in the No. 1 spot, but fell 6-2, 6-4. Three WMU players were in their third set when the Fighting Irish clinched the match. Senior Ruben Greiner was leading 6-3, 4-6, 3-2 while junior Daniel Loebel was up 6-4, 3-6, 3-0 in the No. 6 spot. Sophomore Maik Steiner was also in the third set, trailing 6-4, 3-6, 2-1.
WMU returns to action next weekend with a match against Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Noon in East Lansing, Mich.
