CLEVELAND – The Western Michigan football team has placed a program record 16 players on the 2016 Academic All-MAC Team.
Lucas Bezzera, Kasey Carson, Lucas Cherocci, David Curle, Alex Grace, Austin Guido, Luke Juriga, John Keenoy, Odell Miller, Derek Mitchell, Taylor Moton, Zach Novoselsky, Giovanni Ricci, Trevor Sweeney, Zach Terrell and Justin Tranquill all excelled in the classroom as well as on the playing field for the Broncos this season. Of that group, nine players were repeat selections (Bezerra, Carson, Cherocci, Curle, Mitchell, Moton, Novoselsky, Sweeney and Terrell).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Next week, Faculty Academic Representatives will also vote from the Academic All-MAC list for the Distinguished Scholar Team award to choose the best of the best who represented their school athletically and academically.
