KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Junior Sydney LeMay capped off a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-12) win with her 1,000th career kill as the Western Michigan volleyball team defeated Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan at University Arena on Friday night.
LeMay's historic marker came in the second set and was one of her eight kills on the night, becoming the 22nd player in program history to reach 1,000. The Broncos spread their 41 kills across the board with Olivia Kofie and Bailey Schnell leading the way with nine. Senior Alysia Baznik also had eight kills on the night as WMU (9-17, 4-9 MAC) held a .419 attacking percentage, the highest since a .474 clip against Maine on Sept. 10, 2004.. Mary Murphy had 36 assists and Baznik led the way with 10 digs. Western Michigan also had nine total blocks on the night, led by LeMay's three solo and two assists.
The first set was tightly contested with each team trading small leads. With the Chippewas leading 10-9, the Broncos broke the set open with an 8-2 run, taking a 17-12 lead. WMU maintained the gap but CMU stormed back with a 4-0 run to get within one point, 19-18. Western Michigan finished off the set with a 6-1 run, ending it with a kill by Murphy and a CMU attacking error.
The beginning of the second set was another tight one, with the team trading leads four times until the Chippewas opened up a 12-10 lead on back-to-back kills by Kathia Sanchez. Western Michigan responded with a 7-1 run to open up the set, 17-13. WMU maintained its gap, extending it to six points at 2-15 and the Broncos took the set on a kill and an ace by Schnell.
WMU dominated the third set, holding Central Michigan to a .067 hitting percentage. The Broncos stormed out of the break and took an 8-2 lead to open up the set. WMU maintained its six-point lead at 12-6 and then broke it open with a 5-0 run to take a 17-6 lead. Western Michigan kept CMU at arm's length and then finished off the set after back-to-back Chippewa errors, 25-12.
Western Michigan is back in action on Saturday at 8 p.m. against Eastern Michigan.
