Postgame Notes
MUNCIE, Ind. – Corey Davis set the Western Michigan single-game record with 272 yards receiving and caught three touchdowns, helping lead the No. 17-ranked Broncos (9-0, 5-0 MAC) to a 52-20 victory over Ball State. Davis' three TDs also gives him 47 for his career, tying the Mid-American Conference career touchdown record. WMU's 9-0 record is the best in school history.
Â
How it happened:
Davis' first TD grab came when the Broncos were up 14-7 in the first quarter. Western Michigan's offensive line picked up a blitz and
Zach Terrell hit Davis in stride on a post route for a 57-yard touchdown to make it 21-7.
Â
Davis' second TD was the highlight of the night. From the 35-yard line, Terrell found Davis in the right corner of the end zone as he had a catch very similar to his one last week against Eastern Michigan when he reached over the defender and pulled it in for the 28-7 lead.
Â
The third Davis score of the night put the game out of reach on the first play of the third quarter. He caught a deep crossing route and ran 62 yards to the left corner of the end zone for the 35-10 lead just 20 seconds into the second half.
Â
Other Broncos also showed out during the victory as
Darius Phillips showcased to the nation just how talented the Broncos are on the very first series. He was in man coverage and took a ball away from a Ball State receiver and ran 75 yards down the left sideline for his third interception return of the season. It was Phillips' fifth non-offensive TD of the year.
Â
After Ball State answered to tie the game at 7-7,
Jarvion Franklin made his presence known. First he shook out of a tackle to get six yards on a pass. He then flashed his speed as he ran up the middle un touched for 23 yards to make the game 14-7. He later ran one in from a few yards out to make it 42-10.
Â
The WMU defense held when it needed to as recorded three takeaways in the first half and stopped Ball State on both of its fourth down conversion attempts. Along with Phillips' interception,
Justin Ferguson also picked off a pass and
Asantay Brown forced and recovered a fumble just before halftime.
David Curle contributed on special teams as he recorded a block on the Cardinals' 44-yard field goal attempt.
Â
In the fourth quarter,
Butch Hampton drilled a 23-yard field goal for WMU. Reserve quarterback
Tom Flacco ripped off a career-high 55-yard keeper, setting up a 1-yard touchdown by
Fabian Johnson. Ball State managed its second TD of the game with 45 seconds remaining.
