Men's Basketball Falls to UTEP, Final Game of Charleston Classic on Sunday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's basketball team dropped its second game of the Gildan Charleston Classic to UTEP Friday afternoon at TD Arena; The Miners, who shot nearly 60-percent, came away with an 85-75 victory.

The Broncos (1-3) will face the loser of Mississippi State/Boise State on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN3 in the seventh place game to finish out the tournament.

The game stayed close for the full 40 minutes, with five ties and two lead changes. The Broncos took an early 6-3 lead in the first half, but the Miners followed that with a 12-2 run to take a lead they would not lose. In the second half, WMU tied the game at 12:58 and came within two at the 6:23 using a 10-0 run.

Four players scored in double-figures for WMU, including Tucker Haymond, who led the team in points (20), rebounds (8) and assists (6). Junior Thomas Wilder scored 16 and hit three 3-pointers, making him the only member of the squad to score in double-figures in all four games this season. Freshman Brandon Johnson scored 12 and grabbed five rebounds while Bryce Moore scored 11 and hit three 3-pointers in the first half. Junior Drake LaMont was extremely efficient, scoring 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

For the Miners, Dominic Artis finished an assist shy of a triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Matt Willms scored a game-high 22 points.

The Miners were hot all game long, finishing with a 58.7-percent field goal percentage. They shot 66.7-percent in the second half and went 8-for-19 from 3-point range. WMU was outrebounded, 37-29 but committed eight less turnovers than UTEP.
