Broncos Record Sixth Clean Sheet in 0-0 Draw With Akron

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team recorded its sixth shutout of the season after a 0-0 draw against Akron on Sunday afternoon. Due to field conditions at the WMU Soccer Complex, the game was played at Kalamazoo College's Mackenzie Field.

The Broncos (9-6-1, 3-4-1) dominated possession and outshot the Zips 27-8, including 10-2 in shots on goal. When called upon, the WMU defense and midfield were able to snuff out any of Akron's attempt to counter-attack. Senior Makenzie Larson started on the game and was subbed out at half time for Stephanie Heber. Heber made two saves in her 65 minutes of work.

"All credit to our defense," said head coach Lauren Sinacola. "Both keepers, Mak and Steph, had really strong performances. On the attacking side, to produce the amount of opportunities we produced, we moved the ball really well. The combinations were great. All the action in the final third, it was really well done. It was just the final piece to put it in the back of the net that was missing."

Alyssa Burke and Kendal Juhnke led the team with six shots, while Juhnke had a team-best four land on goal. The best chances in the first half came from Juhnke and freshman forward Erin Madigan. In the 28th minute Juhnke launched a shot from just outside the box and it was punched away by Akron goalkeeper Samara Yurchak for one of her nine saves. In the 39th minute Madigan tried to curl a shot in but it bounced off the cross bar and out.

Alex Ruffer, Emma Kahn and Burke each had chances saved in the second half, while Heber was called on to make her two saves in the half.

WMU had a chance to end it early in the second overtime just 32 seconds in. Mackenzie Barber headed a cross just wide of the post and out of bounds. Juhnke, Burke and Kahn all had chances in the second overtime but Yurchak stopped them all.

The Broncos head on the road with a game at Bowling Green on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then continue on the road to Toledo on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
