First Half Rally Leads to Women's Soccer Victory in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team returned to winning fashion, defeating Bowling Green, 4-3,  on Thursday evening at the Cochrane Field.

Under the lights and in the rain the entire 90 minutes of play, the Broncos used a strong first half connecting on four goals. Senior forward Olivia Vollmers scored twice for Western Michigan as the Broncos' record improves to 10-6-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Mid-American Conference play.

Highlighting the victory, the 2016 seniors including Liz Abro, Mackenzie Barber, Jewell Edwards, Makenzie Larson, Megan Ross, Candice Uhl and Vollmers become the only class to win 10 or more games in a year, every year they competed for the Brown & Gold.

Senior forward Uhl and sophomore midfielder Alyssa Burke tallied a goal apiece for the Broncos while Abro, Maria Jaramillo and Ross dished out the assists.

"Tonight's game was a lot of fun," commented WMU head coach Lauren Sinacola. "Seven goals in one half is something I haven't been apart of or seen in the college game for awhile. I am extremely happy with how the team responded after giving up the lead. We took care of the intangibles tonight and it led to a great result."

How it Happened:
The Broncos capitalized early in the eighth minute when midfielder Alyssa Burke dribbled past a couple Falcon defenders. The sophomore found herself wide open at the top of the box, placing it into the left corner. The goal was her second of the season.

Bowling Green forward Erica Hubert answered with back-to-back goals in the 13th and 15th minute to give the Falcons the 2-1 lead.

Western Michigan evened the score in the 25th minute after Abro sailed a ball into the box. The Falcon goalkeeper deflected the ball right into Uhl's feet. The forward placed the ball in the back of the net as the scoreboard read 2-2.

After a WMU defensive miscue, Bronco goalkeeper Stephanie Heber came up big saving a Falcon shot but the ball deflected to Hubert who finished her third goal of the game and giving BGSU the 3-2 lead in the 37th minute.

In the 41st minute, Jaramillo sent a streaking corner into the box. Defender Ross was able to rise above and flick the ball straight towards Vollmers. The composed senior volleyed the ball past the Falcon keeper, evening the score at 3 apiece.

As the clock ran down, Vollmers received a Jaramillo cross into the box. The forward took a touch around the Bowling Green defender finishing the game-winning goal with just 10 seconds till halftime.

The second half proved to be the complete opposite as neither team had many goal-scoring opportunities. Heber kept the Falcons off the board in the second half during the 63rd minute, stopping a Bowling Green breakaway. The Broncos would maintain most of possession during the remainder of regulation walking away with a 4-3 victory.

After the night, Western Michigan produced 22 shots placing 10 on frame compared to the Falcons producing 6 shots on net. WMU held the 6-1 advantage in corner kicks during the evening. Goalkeeper Heber was called upon to make three saves under the lights to hold the lead.
