COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Western Michigan freshman forward Griffen Molino has been named National Collegiate Hockey Conference Rookie of the Month after putting up eight points and helping the Broncos to three wins in the month of December.
Molino helped WMU break its eight-game losing streak by recording back-to-back career-best nights in a sweep over Colorado College. The Trenton, Mich., native scored a goal and two assists in a 7-3 win over the Tigers. The next night he tallied two goals and two assists in the team's 5-3 win to complete the sweep.
Molino ended the month by setting up the game-winning goal in Western Michigan's 1-0 win over No. 12 Bowling Green on Dec. 30. His eight points were second nationally among freshman and tops in the NCHC. They also catapulted him to the top of the team scoring sheet, now leading the team with 15 points on five goals and 10 assists.
The Broncos are back in action this weekend with a home-and-home series against No. 15/14 Notre Dame. Friday's game is at South Bend and will be televised on NBC Sports Network. Saturday's game at Lawson Ice Arena is at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
