Men's Tennis Gets Ready for Weekend Matches With Green Bay and Valpo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team will battle a pair of Horizon League opponents in Green Bay and Valparaiso this weekend. First, the Broncos will take on the Phoenix on Friday, Jan. 29 at West Hills with match time starting at 7 p.m. and then will head down to face the Crusaders on Sunday, Jan. 31 with match time scheduled for 3 p.m.

WMU is off to a perfect 3-0 start while Green Bay is 2-1 and Valpo is 1-1. WMU leads the all-time series 13-3, with the Phoenix and also leads the Crusaders 25-1.

The Broncos are coming off a 4-0 win over Eastern Kentucky and a 4-2 win over Purdue with both coming on Saturday, Jan. 23. The win over Purdue gave the Broncos a win over a Big Ten opponent for the 14th straight season. Throughout both matches, sophomore Daniel Loebel went 2-0 in singles play while junior Matt Hamilton went 1-0 and sophomores Jefta Kecic and Maik Steiner each went 1-1. In doubles play, the duo of senior Ruben Greiner/Loebel went 2-0 clinching both doubles points in the wins over the Colonels and the Boilermakers. The doubles team of Jimmy Beckwith/Steiner went 2-0 as well.

For the Broncos, the doubles team of Kecic and Stephen Payne came in ranked No. 37 in the Jan. 5 Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Valpo also has a doubles team ranked, the duo of Charlie Emhardt and Jeffrey Schorsch came in at No. 33.
