Broncos Post Third Straight Shutout in 1-0 Victory Over IUPUI

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Western Michigan men's soccer (3-0-0) kept a clean sheet for the third straight game and defeated IUPUI in a 1-0 road victory on a goal by senior Nick Wysong Sunday.

Western Michigan's offense rattled off 16 shots in the game and placed five on goal. The defense was stingy, only allowing IUPUI (0-2-1) six attempts. WMU redshirt sophomore Drew Shepherd made three saves and has yet to allow a goal this season. WMU held a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Sophomore Brandon Bye was credited with an assist on Wysong's goal in the 53rd minute. Bye's shot from the left side was turned away, but Wysong was there for the rebound, hammering it into the upper 90. Wysong has totaled a point in all three Bronco contests this fall and scored the game-winning goal in each of the last two matches. He also had the lone goal in a 1-0 win at IPFW last Sunday.

“The men played a very good game today,” said WMU head coach Chad Wiseman. “We were able to create some great chances in both halves. Wysong again stepped up and took his opportunity with quality. You have to give some credit to the IUPUI goalkeeper because he was fantastic today, not only did he make several big saves his distribution was spot on with their counter attacks.

“Defensively we were rock solid. Zach Bock led the way and did a really nice job on Emmanuel Usen their key attacking player. Shepherd was only really forced to make play once in each half. IUPUI did a good job breaking up the flow of the game, they are very much a defend and counter team, however we did a great job stopping their counter attacks.

“This is a fun team to be around. We are playing well and winning games at the moment. We're excited to head home and host the Radiation Invitational at the end of this week.”

After playing its last two on the road, Western Michigan returns home to host the Radisson Invitational, Sept. 11 & 13 at the WMU Soccer Complex. The Broncos will welcome Detroit, St. Bonaventure and Western Illinois for the four-team tournament.

WMU is slated to play against St. Bonaventure at 5 p.m. Friday and Western Illinois on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Radisson Invitational kicks off a stretch of games where WMU is home for four of five games, also welcoming Dayton, Valparaiso and St. Mary's over the following two weeks.

Admission to all Bronco home soccer games is free.
