WMU Stays Unbeaten, Shuts Out Western Illinois to Win Radisson Invitational

Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team shut out its fifth-straight opponent, blanking Western Illinois in a 1-0 victory Sunday. The Broncos posted two wins over the weekend to win the first annual Radisson Invitational, which was hosted by WMU and featured Detroit, St. Bonaventure and Western Illinois. Western Michigan downed St. Bonaventure on Friday, 8-0.

WMU's record now stands at 5-0-0 and the Broncos are just one of a handful of teams from around the nation that have yet to allow a goal this season. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Drew Shepherd played a complete 90 minutes Sunday and was only forced to make one save. Western Illinois had only three shots in the match.

The Broncos dominated the stats column and just a few unlucky touches prevented the team from putting more goals away. Western Michigan had 17 corner kicks and fired 18 shots, seven on goal.

Sophomore midfielder Brandon Bye finally broke the scoreless tie in the 73rd minute, heading in a ball from junior midfielder Edu Jimenez. Jimenez played a corner kick on the left and the ball got sent out of the box back to him. Jimenez worked his defender and delivered a second service in, to which Bye was able to leap above the crowd and knock in successfully. It was Bye's second goal of the season and Jimenez's fourth assist of the weekend.

Jimenez, junior midfielder Hunter Vandenboom, senior defender Sean Hazen, and senior defender Connor Furgason were the four Broncos recognized on the all-tournament team. Furgason, WMU's team captain and center back of the defense, was named the Tournament MVP. In addition to directing the back line to two shutouts, Furgason had a goal Friday against St. Bonaventure.

“As a coaching staff we are extremely happy for the guys,” said WMU head coach Chad Wiseman. “They are doing what we ask out of them and they're being rewarded for it. I'd like to thank the Radisson Hotel for putting on the tournament this weekend, they're true leaders in our community adn we are very grateful for their support.

“You have to give Western Illinois some credit they really competed out there today and made it difficult for us at times. Brandon Bye's game-winning goal certainly was one of quality.”

Western Michigan continues its homestand, returning to the WMU Soccer Complex Sept. 20 for a match against Dayton and Sept. 23 for a contest against Valparaiso.
