Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind.- A second-half goal by senior
Nick Wysong lifted the Western Michigan (2-0-0) men's soccer team past IPFW on the road Sunday afternoon,1-0. The Broncos have started off the 2015 season with two straight wins and will travel to IUPUI on Sunday, Sept. 6.
WMU redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Drew Shepherd made four saves in his second 90-minute shutout. Three of those four stops came in the first half.
Wysong broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute after a yellow card on IPFW resulted in a free kick five yards out side of the box. Wysong struck just past Mastodon keeper Raphael Kotzock's right side. Shepherd went on to make one more save in the second half as the Bronco back line defended six total shots in the final 45 minutes.
“It wasn't pretty but we got the result and that's the most important thing,” said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. “The field conditions were very difficult and really chopped the flow of the game up for both teams. I thought our leadership was fantastic, with 10 seniors on the team we know that will be strong throughout the season.
“We open up the season 2-0 and I am very happy for the men. Wysong's free kick to win the game was special and it was another clean sheet. Defensively, we really locked down.”
Following the road trip to IUPUI, Western Michigan returns home to host the first annual Radisson Invitational, Sept. 11 & 13. Admission to all Bronco home games, played at the WMU Soccer Complex on the Engineering Campus, is free.
