BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team had its first taste of preseason play, taking on Indiana Thursday, Aug. 20. Despite the Broncos' best efforts, two second-half goals pushed the Hoosiers past WMU by a 2-0 final.
Indiana is coming off a 12-5-5 season a year ago and was ranked No. 14 in the nation in the preseason NSCAA poll.
The game was played inside Memorial Stadium, the home of the IU football team, in an effort to preserve the playing surface at the regular home for IU soccer – Armstrong Stadium.
In the first half, the two teams played fairly even across the board, both creating a pair of chances on the attack but coming up empty. In the second half, IU sophomore Grant Lillard broke the scoreless tie with a header off a corner kick. Later in the half, senior Femi Hollinger-Janzen put the Hoosiers up 2-0 finishing from the six off a sideline run and service from Rees Wedderburn.
“Overall I was pleased with what we got out of the game,” said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. “We have several things we need to work on and correct which we will. IU is a great team, playing them today will make us better, that I know.
“The first half I thought was pretty even with field conditions chopping the game up quit a bit for both teams. We had a couple half chances on set pieces we may have been able to take better. In the second half give IU credit they capitalized on a nice set piece, and we lost our discipline on a key player and he made us pay.”
Western Michigan has a final exhibition contest at home on Sunday, Aug. 23 against Alma at 4 PM. The Broncos then open the regular season hosting Marshall on Aug. 28 at 4 p.m.
