KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team announced today that Eric Olivarez, Jr., Matej Svjetlicic and Nick Schnobel have all signed National Letters of Intent to join the Bronco tennis program in Fall 2016. All three will have four years of eligibility.
Olivarez is the cousin of former Bronco Pablo Olivarez and comes to Western Michigan from the Philippines. The 17-year-old recruit has competed in numerous international tournaments over the course of his young career, most recently advancing to the round of 16 in the main draw of the 2015 Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup in Malaysia, and has been part of the Philippine National Men's Tennis team. Olivarez is currently ranked second among under-18 men in the Philippines and has ranked as highly as #341 in the International Tennis Federation world rankings. His uncle Edwin is the current President of the Philippine Tennis Association, a post once held by his grandfather Pablo.
Schnobel is a Holland, Mich. product that attends West Ottawa High School, the same program that produced former Bronco All-MAC performer Ross VanderPloeg. Despite just taking up the game of tennis in his freshman year of high school, Schnobel has been exceptional, earning an array of honors at West Ottawa. A captain of his team in 2014, he was both the Regional and the OK-Red champions at No. 1 singles that year and qualified for the Midwest Closed tournament. Schnobel was a first-team all-area and all-conference selection in 2013 and was also named the Holland Sentinel Player of the Year. He is three-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net and is ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the state. He intends to earn a degree in Business at WMU.
Svjetlicic hails from Zagreb, Croatia, where he has been one of the top men's tennis players in his nation since taking up the game of tennis at 13 years old. The left-handed prospect has recorded a number of impressive decision in his young career, including defeating Tomislav Brkic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Feb. 11, 2013; Brkic was ranked 240th in the world at the time. The next day Svjetlicic put up a strong fight against the 104th-ranked player in the world, falling in three sets to Damir Dzumhur. He has been ranked in the top-three among Croatian boys' tennis players in both the under-16 and under-18 age brackets, and is currently ranked in the top-five among all men's tennis players in the country. He intends to study Business at WMU.
