Women's Tennis Snares Eagles in MAC Play

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team continued its early surge in Mid-American Conference play on Sunday, dominating Eastern Michigan on the road for their third straight win with a 6-1 decision over the Eagles. The victory improves the Broncos' record to 11-8 on the season, 3-1 against MAC opponents. The victory closes out a stretch in which WMU played three of its first four conference matches on the road.

The 6-1 score represented the largest margin of victory for the Broncos over the Eagles in six years, dating back to a 7-0 victory over the Eagles on March 27, 2009. Four of the six Broncos in the line-up went 2-0 on the day, including Olivia Myers, who improved to 3-0 in No. 1 singles matches with a three-set victory over Klara Supejova.

Barbare Eristavi and Yuriko Ono added to their team-leading doubles wins total to open the doubles session, beating Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles match. Myers and Tracy Kuhle followed by clinching the doubles point with an equally dominant win, beating Anna Veleva and Ani Gogvadze 6-3 in the No. 3 doubles match to award the Broncos the opening point in the match.

Meika Ashby got back on the winning track in the first singles match off the court, giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead over the Eagles with a shutout 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gogvadze in the No. 2 singles match. Eristavi pushed it to 3-0 with a straight-sets victory over Andrea Martinovska in the No. 3 singles match. Kuhle delivered the clinching victory for the Broncos, beating Friedrichs 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot to deliver a team win for WMU.

The Broncos weren't done, however, with Myers and Ono each notching singles wins to wrap up the scoring for the day. Myers bounced back from a set down against Supejova in the No. 1 singles match, beating her 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6). Ono also bounced back from a set loss, falling in a second-set tiebreaker to Barcelo before winning 6-3, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (6).
