COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Western Michigan freshman forward Griffen Molino has been named National Collegiate Hockey Conference Rookie of the Week after his performance in WMU's sweep of Colorado College.
The Trenton, Mich., native had a career weekend in the Broncos' two wins. In Friday's 7-3 victory he tallied a career-best three points on two assists and a goal. He assisted on the first two goals of the game to help Western Michigan jump out to a 2-0 lead. Molino later netted his third goal of the season to push the lead to 6-2.
Molino bested himself in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Tigers, this time moving his career-best bench mark to four points on two goals and two assists. He scored the first and last goal of the game for his first career multi-goal game. His fourth of the season came just 3:47 into the first period to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. He assisted on the next two goals to push the lead to 3-1, and then added an empty-netter with 37 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Molino's seven points on the weekend doubled his season total and now sits as WMU's top point man through the first 17 games this season.
