Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan football team defeated visiting Miami (OH) 35-13 on the Broncos' 92nd annual Homecoming to keep its record unbeaten (3-0) in the Mid-American Conference.
After trailing 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, Western Michigan went on to outscore the RedHawks 14-0 in the second quarter and 28-3 over the rest of the course of the game. The Broncos led 21-10 at halftime.
Junior quarterback Zach Terrell continued to put up his usual consistent numbers, completing 25 of 32 pass attempts for 278 yards and three touchdowns.
Wide receivers Daniel Braverman and Corey Davis each had over 100 yards receiving for the third time this season. Braverman has gone over 100 yards in six of the Western Michigan's seven games.
Braverman hauled in the first touchdown of the game to give WMU a 7-0 advantage and another to start the third quarter to push WMU's lead to 28-10. He finished with 135 yards on 13 catches.
Davis caught seven passes for 113 yards.
Western Michigan's running back trio of Jarvion Franklin, Jamauri Bogan and LeVante Bellamy produced 147 yards on the ground. Bogan did a bulk of the work, carrying 19 times for 88 yards and scoring two touchdowns.
The Broncos' defense held Miami to just 58 rushing yards and 276 yards of total offense, including only 100 in the second half. Asantay Brown, Darius Phillips, Jarrell McKinney and Trevor Sweeney all forced fumbles for WMU. The defense also recorded four sacks, after having entered the game with just five all season.
Linebackers Caleb Bailey and Robert Spillane led Western Michigan with nine tackles, followed by Phillips with eight.
Western Michigan recovered two fumbles, the first on the third play of the game deep in Miami territory. Brown blitzed from the corner, sacking and stripping the ball away from Miami quarterback Billy Bahl. Jamar Simpkins recovered for WMU at the RedHawks' 8-yard line. Two plays later, Terrell hit Braverman for a 7-0 Bronco lead.
Miami pieced together a six-play, 82-yard drive on its next possession. Gus Ragland ran in an 8-yard touchdown for Miami's only TD of the day. The RedHawks added a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter to briefly hold a 10-7 lead.
Western Michigan went on to score its next two drives in the first half to pull ahead for good. Redshirt junior Carrington Thompson caught a six-yard pass for his second career touchdown to start the second quarter. Just before the halftime break, Bogan darted up the right sideline untouched on a 4th-and-1 for a 17-yard touchdown.
The Broncos opened the third quarter with the ball and marched swiftly down the field. The offense only saw third down once on its 12-play drive and was capped by a 5-yard touchdown reception by Braverman.
Kaleb Patterson knocked in a 38-yard field goal off the upright for Miami in the third quarter and Bogan scored another rushing touchdown for Western Michigan with two minutes left in the game.
Attendance for the game was 18,523. There was a 10-minute period of heavy rainfall during the second quarter.
Western Michigan (4-3 overall) heads to Eastern Michigan Thursday, facing the Eagles Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. WMU returns home for back-to-back home games, hosting Ball State Nov. 5 and Bowling Green Nov. 11.
