Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's soccer team earned its first Mid-American Conference (MAC) victory of the season Saturday defeating Bowling Green 2-1 to improve its record to 7-3-2 overall and 1-1 in the MAC. Senior Carlos Suarez scored both of WMU's goals with one in the first half and one in the second half.
“Carlos really gave us a great lift scoring two great goals today; If one individual is able to score twice than I like our chances,” Broncos head coach Chad Wiseman said. “Bowling Green is a very good team and very similar to us in many ways and they were a bit unlucky in the first half with a couple of bounces not going their way.”
Suarez scored his third and fourth goals of the season to tie senior Nick Wysong for the team lead. In the first half, Suarez connected on his first goal of the game in the 39th minute off an assist by Brandon Bye and Wysong. Wysong tied Edu Jimenez for the team lead in assists with five while Bye took over second place on the team with four.
Early in the second half, Suarez scored a goal in the 51st minute off an assist by Sean Conerty, his third assist of the season to give the Broncos a 2-0 advantage. Less than 10 minutes later in the 59th minute, Bowling Green's Jacob Roth was awarded a penalty kick which he converted to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Falcons had their opportunities late, but the Broncos defense stayed strong avoiding the game tying goal in the final minutes as the Falcons (6-7-1, 0-2 MAC) won the shot battle 11-8.
Chase Rau played the complete game at goalie for the Broncos and made three saves to improve his record to 2-3-1.
Western Michigan returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20 as they host UW-Green Bay at the WMU Soccer Complex with the kickoff slated for 4 p.m.
