Box Score MORGANTOWN, W. Va.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team fell in its Mid-American Conference opener Friday evening, falling to the Mountaineers by a 1-0 final.
“That was a fantastic MAC opener for the fans that watched the game,” said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. “It was unfortunate we were on the wrong end of the result because I thought we played very well.
“We were able to press them and turn them over in dangerous areas of the field, we just were not able to break through on the scoresheet. We were extremely disciplined throughout the match in our defending, we did not make many mistakes, but you must give West Virginia credit, they pounced on one of our mistakes and made us pay the ultimate price.”
A goal by Jamie Merriam in the 84th minute was the difference-maker, as the WVU senior buried his shot low on the backside after a pass slotted across the box by Joey Piatczyc.
Western Michigan redshirt sophomore
Drew Shepherd and senior
Chase Rau split time in goal with Rau playing the second half.
WMU had 13 shots in the game, lead by senior
Nick Wysong with five, including three on goal. WMU forced WVU goalie Alec Boerner to make four saves, including crucial saves in the 62nd and 67th minute.
“The MAC is going to be an absolute battle this year,” Wiseman said. “The quality of our conference top to bottom may be at an absolute all-time best. These games can come down to a couple plays either way. We didn't do enough to win the game and will accept that and be better next time out. I am extremely confident in this team. Our leadership will continue to push through, so us how to respond and keep us focused.”
The loss was just Western Michigan's second of the season and the goal was just the fourth conceded by the Broncos this fall. WMU's record now stands at 6-2-2, 0-1-0 MAC.
WMU travels to Michigan State on Tuesday, Oct. 13 for a 4 p.m. matchup and hosts Bowling Green next Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. Admission to all Bronco home games is free.
