Box Score DETROIT, Mich.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team posted its sixth shutout in eight games played this season, battling Detroit to a 0-0 draw Wednesday in the Motor City.
WMU's record improved to 5-1-2 with the result. The six shutouts ties for fourth most in program history and is three shy of tying the school single season record of nine. The Broncos have 10 regular-season matches remaining with their next contest coming at home Saturday against St. Mary's at 4 p.m. Admission to home games is free.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Drew Shepherd made two saves to preserve the clean sheet, fending off a shot on goal in the first half of regulation and in the first period of overtime.
Shepherd has not yet suffered a loss in goal, where his record stands at 5-0-1 on the year. He has surrendered just one goal in 560 minutes this season and is among the nation's leaders for save percentage (.941) and goals-against average (0.16). He has faced 36 total shots and made 16 saves.
“Another clean sheet, that's the positive from the result,” said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. “Our back line and goalkeepers have been fantastic all year, they were not called upon much today but the few half chances Detroit got we stood tall. None have been bigger than Drew coming off his line in the first overtime to cut off a breakaway.”
Sophomore
Jay McIntosh made his first official appearance as a Bronco, starting at forward and playing 93 minutes. A Kalamazoo Loy Norrix graduate, McIntosh was a highly touted transfer after spending his freshman season last year at Indiana. McIntosh was slowed in making his WMU debut by a preseason injury. He led Western Michigan with three shots in the game, putting two on goal.
“It was nice to see Jay play his first minutes as a Bronco,” Wiseman said. “He brings an element to our team that we have been missing. He was very effective today.”
Western Michigan out-shot Detroit 14-7 and forced Titan goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher to make six saves. WMU took six corner kicks and held Detroit to two. The Broncos nearly had the first goal of the game as sophomore
Brandon Bye fired a shot from the top of the box that hit the corner of the crossbar in the 80th minute.
“We again had several chances in the final third, just lacking the final bite, determination and or quality that's needed to score the ball. It's the hardest thing to do in our sport, we will keep working on it.
“Detroit is a well-organized blue collar team. They believe in their system and physically compete at every position. They're tough to breakdown.”
It was the third straight draw for Detroit (3-2-5 record) which upped its unbeaten streak to six matches.
