KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Four different players scored, three of them in the second half, as Western Michigan men's soccer pummeled visiting Northern Kentucky, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. The win was the Broncos' fifth in the last six games, improving the team's record to 5-3-1 on the season.
Sophomore
Carlos Suarez got the scoring going in the ninth minute and WMU held to a 1-0 lead at halftime. Junior
Nick Wysong gave the Broncos a 2-0 cushion in the 65th minute with his team-leading third goal of the season. First-year Bronco
Greg Timmer and freshman
Logan Wright followed with goals in the 83rd and 89th minutes. The four goals were a team-high this season.
The shutout was the the second of the year for junior goalkeeper
Chase Rau and the Bronco defense. Rau made four saves between the posts.
Suarez's goal was his second of 2014, as he took a backside volley from
Hunter Vandenboom and drilled it into the right corner of the net. Wysong's tally in the 65th minute was the back-breaking blow for Northern Kentucky, as it increased the deficit to two and took away what little fight the Norse had left.
Sean Conerty played a tremendous ball over the top to Wysong who beat a defender 1v1 and tucked it low.
Timmer also found himself with one defender to beat on his goal, after hard pressure from Suarez caused a turnover deep in Norse territory. Timmer, last year's National Junior College Player of the Year, had no trouble finishing for his first goal at Western Michigan.
Wright subbed in with just under five minutes left to play and found his first collegiate goal moments later. Conerty blasted a shot from 30 yards out that rang off the crossbar and the rebound fell to Wright, who fought around a defender and buried the ball low right.
“Great performance from start to finish from the men today,” commented head coach
Chad Wiseman. “We were sharp in our possession and took our chances extremely well in the final third. It was great to see Logan and Greg score their first goals in a Bronco uniform. It was a great team victory, I'm very happy for the guys.”
WMU travels to Ann Arbor next Wednesday to face Michigan at 7:30 p.m. The Broncos return to Kalamazoo to host IUPUI on Saturday, Oct. 4 at noon.
