GREEN BAY, Wis.- The Western Michigan (4-2-1) men's soccer team rattled off its fourth-straight victory, defeating Green Bay on the road Friday evening, 2-1. Junior
Connor Furgason had a goal and an assist in the winning effort and junior
Cam Jensen booted in his first goal of the season.
The win was just Western Michigan's third ever in 26 all-time meetings against Green Bay, and the Broncos' first over the Phoenix since 2000, snapping a seven-game winless streak against the perennial power out of the Horizon League.
“What a gutsy performance today out of the guys,” said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. “The conditions of the field were very poor, the boys just ground out the result today. It's not easy to travel all the way up to Green Bay and get out of there with a win.”
Western Michigan built a 2-0 lead with a goal by Furgason in the 24th minute and Jensen's goal in the 57th. Both were generated off corner kicks, as sophomore
Edu Jimenez served two beautiful balls into the box. Furgason finished on a header in the first half for his second goal of the season and was able to use his 6-2 frame to flick on the ball to Jensen in the second half. Jensen stormed in at the back post to register his third career goal. The assists were Jimenez's third and fourth of the year.
“
Connor Furgason was a man amongst boys today and stood out as the best player on the field,” Wiseman commented.
Green Bay scored in the 80th minute on a goal by Fayçal Oulahbib to cut the deficit in half. The play was started off a corner kick by the Phoenix, and after the ball was initially cleared by WMU, Green Bay sent it back in to the box which led to the goal.
“We really limited their chances in the final third, I thought our defensive shape was spot on and the guys stuck with it for 90 minutes,” said Wiseman. “Their best chances really came late in the game when they were pumping balls into the box.”
WMU led the shot count 12-8 and 9-4 on corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper
Chase Rau made two saves for the Broncos.
The loss dropped Green Bay's record to 3-3-1 on the year.
Western Michigan continues its two-game road trip at Western Illinois (2-4-1) on Sunday, facing the Leathernecks at 3:30 p.m. ET.
