KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Current Western Michigan men's soccer player
Nick Wysong contributed significant minutes this past weekend as the Michigan Bucks claimed a national championship in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (PDL).
The PDL is the pro development league of the United Soccer Leagues and runs through the summer months, prior to the collegiate season. It is considered the top-level of men's amateur soccer competition in the US, with 62 teams competing in four conferences.
Wysong was the starting left back in
Friday's semifinal, in which the Bucks staged a dramatic second half comeback to upset the top-seeded Jersey Express, 2-1. In
Sunday's championship game, Wysong came off the bench in the 67th minute to help his squad preserve a 1-0 victory over the Kitsap (Wash.) Pumas.
“Winning the national championship is a truly special feeling and one you will never forget,” said Wysong. “I was very fortunate to be part of such a great organization and welcomed as a first-year player. Everyone at this level wants to make it pro and it was an awesome experience to play with players from all over the country.”
This is Wysong's second national championship in as many years, as he was also a part of the Bloomfield Force FC USL Super 20's national championship in 2013. Also on that Super 20's team were Bronco teammates
Greg Timmer and
Hunter Vandenboom.
Wysong enrolled at Western Michigan last school year, after playing his first two collegiate seasons at Pitt. This fall will be his first in a Bronco uniform and he will have two years of eligibility.
“I am excited to play with Greg and Hunter again and get started at Western Michigan and work on winning a Mid-American Conference championship and NCAA bid.”
