KENTWOOD, Mich.- An early second half goal by
Edu Jimenez powered Western Michigan men's soccer past Oakland in the David Warsen Memorial Cup Saturday evening at Pat Patterson Stadium. The 1-0 Bronco victory was the final preseason exhibition for both teams.
After a scoreless first half, Jimenez capitalized on a misplay deep in Oakland territory, gathering a loose ball in the box and striking into an open net in the first minute of the second half.
Redshirt freshman goalie
Drew Shepherd came up with an incredible stop later in the match, denying Matt Rickard on a penalty kick. Rickard sent his shot low to the right and Shepherd dove to his left to make the play.
Western Michigan used three goalies in the game, junior
Chase Rau started the match and gave way to Shepherd shortly after the half.
Adriano Deabreu also made an appearance late in the game.
The David Warsen Memorial Cup was in honor of Petty Officer Second Class Navy SEAL David Warsen who was killed in a helicopter crash northeast of Kandahar Afghanistan on August 16, 2012.
Western Michigan officially opens the 2014 season Aug. 29, hosting Detroit at 5 p.m.
