CLEVELAND -- After completing the greatest turnaround in Mid-American Conference history, Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck has been named MAC Coach of the Year.
Fleck led the Broncos to a 8-4 record overall and a 6-2 record in the MAC West Division this season after winning one game in 2013. As the youngest coach in FBS, he also coached the Broncos to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2011 and the most wins since 2008.
An influx of talent thanks to the MAC's highest-rated recruiting class in conference history, according to Rivals.com, helped produce the MAC's Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in running back Jarvion Franklin. Western Michigan had 11 players named All-MAC under Fleck this season, including first-teamers Franklin, Corey Davis and Donald Celiscar.
Under Fleck WMU won 11 MAC Player of the Week awards this season, had the MAC's top scoring offense, top passing efficiency rating and led the conference in sacks. He was also named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Foundation Coach of the Year Award.
He is the sixth Bronco head coach to be named MAC Coach of the Year and the first since Bill Cubit won it in 2005.
