Women's Basketball Scores 91 Points in Exhibition Against Purdue Calumet

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team stormed past Purdue Calumet in exhibition, 91-55, Saturday at University Arena. Junior forward Jessica Jessing led five Broncos in double figures, tallying 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The preseason showing was Western Michigan's lone exhibition of the year. The team opens the regular season with back-to-back home games, hosting UMass on Nov. 14 and North Dakota State on Nov. 19.

Purdue Calumet came into the meeting already four games into its regular season and with a 4-0 record. PCU is a NAIA Div. II school in Hammond, Ind., and the Peregrines were ranked No. 10 in the nation in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll.

“It's good to have this game from a film standpoint because we can break this down and learn about ourselves especially on the defensive side of the ball," said WMU head coach Shane Clipfell. “It's a great starting point and I'm happy with the performance against really good Purdue Calumet team.”

The Broncos shot 50 percent from the field in each half and buired 11 of 26 three-points attempts (42.3%). Western Michigan dominated its smaller opponent on the boards, 50-30, and forced 21 turnovers.

Jessing helped WMU race out to a 46-20 lead at halftime, scoring 14 of her 19 points in the first half. She recorded her double-double in just 25 minutes of play.

Senior A.J. Johnson also tallied 19 points and was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

All five freshmen saw the court for Broncos. In her debut, 6-3 center Teagan Reeves just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Michelle O'Brien (15 points, 8 rebounds) and junior point guard Alex Morton (10 points, 4 assists) were the other two Broncos to score in double figures.

“We have shown the ability to score the ball and today we showed we can score with some versatility with some nice inside-out action,” Clipfell said.
