DAYTON, Ohio- Three days after defeating No. 19 Akron, the road-tested Western Michigan men's soccer team returned to Ohio to battle a tough Dayton squad to a 2-2 tie Tuesday in a WMU's final non-conference matchup of the season. Junior
Nick Wysong and senior
Jason Grant each registered goals for the Broncos.
Western Michigan's overall record moved to 8-4-4 on the season and with the result, the Broncos have lost just two of their last 12 games.
“What a gusty performance from the guys tonight,” said second-year WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. “Dayton is a very good team that comes at you with numbers and speed. It was a wide open outstanding non-conference match. Both teams went after each other without holding back.”
Wysong gave the Broncos the lead just 2:04 into the game when he took the ball off a Dayton defender in the attacking third and buried it for the first goal of the game. The score tied Wysong for a WMU team-high four goals this season.
Dayton was unable to answer in the first half and went into the locker room with a 1-0 deficit, despite out-shooting the Broncos, 7-5.
The Flyers were gifted an equalizer in the 57th minute. UD midfielder Daniel Spencer played a cross into the box that skipped off a WMU defender and into the back of the net. Another Bronco mishap in the box resulted in the Flyers taking a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute. Western Michigan was whistled for a foul on Dayton's Michael Frasca in penalty area. UD's Amass Amankona put away the PK to give his side a 2-1 advantage.
Western Michigan was not about to walk away without a fight and was able to knot the score seven minutes later. Grant, who was nationally recognized this week after scoring the game-winner at Akron, again came through in the clutch, punching in his second goal in as many games - third goal of the season. Sophomore
Edu Jimenez fed the assist to Grant, who tucked the ball past the goalie on the right.
“This team has great character and resilience,” Wiseman said. “We are peaking at the right time of the year. With two games left we have so much to play for and it's going to be an exciting last 10 days of the regular season.
“Our focus is completely on Saturday's match with a good Bowling Green team. We know what's at stake and the men will be ready for yet another tough Mid-American Conference contest.”
The Broncos currently sit in first place in the MAC standings with a 2-0-1 conference record and have two crucial league matchups remaining. WMU concludes a three-game road trip at Bowling Green on Saturday (Nov. 1) and returns to Kalamazoo to host West Virginia a week later, Saturday, Nov. 8.
