ANN ARBOR, Mich.- Junior centerback Connor Furgason's strike in the 97th minute gave the Western Michigan men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Michigan on the road Wednesday. Western Michigan has defeated the Wolverines in two of the last three meetings, dating back to 2011, with both wins coming in Ann Arbor.
“What an absolute great team performance today,” said WMU head coach Chad Wiseman. “We came to Ann Arbor not believing we could win but knowing we were going to win. I think that's a big difference in our team mentality from last year to this year.
“Furgason's game-winner was a cracker, no goalkeeper was stopping that shot.”
The goal was the third of the year for Furgason and the seventh of his career. After accepting a pass at the top of the 18, he made a turn and boomed a shot into the lower left corner of the net. Junior Nick Wysong recorded his second assist of the season while classmate Sean Conerty registered his team-leading sixth assist on the play.
It was the second-straight shutout for the Broncos and the first time in program history (nine all-time meetings) they have kept a clean sheet against the Wolverines. Junior goalkeeper Chase Rau made two saves, including one in the second half, where he shut down a 1v1 opportunity.
“We have a lot of respect for Michigan and their program, today the better team won and I couldn't be prouder of my guys,” Wiseman said. “We are starting to form our team identity, and its one the coaches are very excited about.”
The Broncos have now won six of their last seven games and the team's record stands at 6-3-1 on the year. Western Michigan's impressive play has been getting noticed, as WMU broke into the regional rankings this week, voted 10th in the Great Lakes Region.
Western Michigan returns home to host IUPUI Saturday, Oct. 4, at noon.
