The Broncos finally took the field after a summer of workouts and preparation for the 2013 campaign.
It was a perfect day at refurbished Waldo Stadium, celebrating its 75th birthday this season but not looking a day over 32, as the team took the field for the first time since the spring practice sessions in March/April.
During MAC Media Day head coach P.J. Fleck said that the team had collectively dropped 400 pounds of fat and it showed. Everyone looked very svelte in their practice jerseys, shorts and newly minted white helmets with brown face masks.
Early practice was filled with individual periods, working on skill and technique. Team sessions did not begin until the 10th of 24 periods with the inside run game. All backs, in fact everyone that touched the ball, carries it to the chin as the Broncos are making a concerted effort to protect the ball in 2013. As Coach Fleck taught throughout spring, "The ball is the program. If you drop the ball, you let the program down."
Prior to today's practice, during Coach Fleck's session with the media, he stated, "This is a Pure Michigan type of afternoon." Very true.
