Women's Soccer Falls at Saint Louis, 3-2

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team dropped its opening game of the season at Saint Louis, falling 3-2 to the Billikens on Friday night in front of 2,442 fans.

After going down early to SLU on a goal by Jenny Hummert in the ninth minute, the Broncos tied the game in the 55th minute on freshman Liz Abro's first career goal. Abro fired a shot straight from outside the box and into the net after receiving the ball from Ali Russo.

The Billikens scored two goals in a span of six minutes to take a 3-1 lead in the 77th by Cristina Rodriguez and 82nd minute by Livi Logan-Wood.

Freshman Megan Ross banged in WMU's second goal of the night with just 1:01 remaining in the second half after Russo played a short cross from the left side of the box.

“It was a disappointing result but we saw some good things,” said head coach Nate Norman. “All credit to Saint Louis though, they were very efficient in the attack and that is something we can definitely be better at.”

The Broncos did outshot SLU 18-9 but the shots-on-goal were deadlocked at five each. Diana Dedvukaj had a game-high seven shots on the night.

The season-opening road trip continues as WMU heads to Iowa to battle the Hawkeyes on Sunday at 2 p.m.
