TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Western Michigan track and field wrapped up competition at the Toledo Invitational on Friday, its final meet before it heads to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships next week.
The Broncos finished off the two-day meet with several performances that solidified MAC Championship qualifying spots. Thursday evening's action saw WMU place well in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior
Iris Campbell took second in the race with a time of 58.44, losing only to Noelle Moncalm, an athlete who ran for Team Canada in the 4x400-meter relay at Penn Relays last week. The time was Campbell's fastest of the season and the top time in the MAC.
Lindsey Hufnagel took seventh with a time of 1:01.14, while Brittney Calhoun also broke the 62 second mark with a time of 1:01.94.
Alexis Hull recorded a big personal-best time after running 1:02.11.
"We looked really good on the track out there," said head coach
Kelly Lycan. "I think we really caught a lot of momentum from the Penn Relays and the Hillsdale relays last weekend and I thought once we got some good training in good weather our times would reflect it."
Campbell also took second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100-meter hurdles. She recorded her fastest time of the year in the 200-meter at 23.96 seconds and ran a time of 14.31 seconds in the hurdles.
Andrea Arnold also placed seventh with her best time of the season at 24.62 seconds, while
Kathryn Pickett recorded a personal-best time in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.34 seconds.
Western Michigan also took the top four spots in the 400-meter dash.
Andrea Arnold took first with a time of 55.84 seconds and was followed by her older sister
Ariel Arnold in second at 56.55. Hull finished in third and
Aisha Hodge, who normally runs in the 800-meter race, dropped down to the long sprint to take fourth overall. Sophomore
Rebecca Hall rounded out the short-sprints with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash and a time of 12.15 seconds.
Hall, Campbell,
Andrea Arnold and freshman
Artia Gunn combined to give WMU's 4x100-meter relay squad its fastest time of the season at 46.07 seconds. The team took first place in the event with Gunn running the anchor leg on her first time running the relay this season.
In the 800-meter run both
Jeriesha Tucker and
Rachel Whitley recorded their best times of the season. Tucker ran 2:13.11 to take first place in her heat and seventh overall, while Whitley finished .03 seconds behind her to take eighth.
The Broncos also had strong performances in the field events, including a personal-best showing the hammer throw by
Chelsea Gerbers. The junior thrower tossed a distance of 54.15 meters (177-08), which registered fourth on Western Michigan's all-time performance list.
WMU took third, fourth and fifth place in the long jump also. Pickett jumped a distance of 5.90 meters (19-04.25) to claim third, while Campbell and
Whitney Freeman finished in fourth and fifth.
"We had some people on the bubble and they really came through in the clutch and will now qualify for the MAC," added Lycan.
The MAC Outdoor Championships begin on Thursday at the University of Akron.
