MUNCIE, Ind. -- In its final meet before the Mid-American Conference Championship the Western Michigan track and field won its ninth straight Ball State Quadrangular, racking up 181.50 points at the Ball State Field Sports building on Friday night.

The Broncos finished ahead of second-place Northern Illinois by 75.50 points with the Huskies racking up 106. Miami finished in third with 90 and the host Cardinals finished in last with 87.50.

"I think the meet definitely served its purpose," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "Besides winning the meet you want to get a nice tune up and get some momentum going into the MAC Championships and we did that today."

Two personal-best performances in the weight throw and the shot put helped the Broncos build their lead early in the meet. Chelsie Gerbers threw a distance of 58 feet, 10 inches to take first place. Stephanie Negrete finished just over two feet behind her to take third place with a distance of 56 feet, 4.75 inches. Fellow junior Andrea Hiler tossed the second best distance in program history in the shot put at 48 feet, 8.75 inches. Her first-place throw edged out Miami's Alexandra Roberts by 2.75 inches. Gerbers also took second place with a distance of 46 feet, 9.50 inches.

"It was a really good day for those two," said Lycan on the performances by Gerbers and Hiler. "We are going to be counting on them to score us some points next week and they did a great job getting after it today."

Whitney Freeman picked up her first collegiate win by taking first place in the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet, two inches with teammate Chiara Allen finished just shy of 38 feet to take second place. Sophomore Kathryn Pickett had a career-best performance in the high jump with a height of five feet, five inches.

The Broncos also won the long jump with Iris Campbell picking up one of her two wins on the day in the event. Campbell also took first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.09 seconds, while Cha'nese Mendenhall finished in fourth with a time of 26.12. Campbell also took second in the 60 meter dash with the fifth fastest time in program history at 7.69 seconds. Sophomore sprinter Rebecca Hall finished just behind her with a time of 7.80.

WMU picked up wins the 400 meter dash and the 3,000 meter run with sophomore Becca Peacock being the top distance performer for the Broncos on the night. WMU finished first, second and third in both events with Peacock winning the 3,000 with a time of 10:33.76. She was followed by Alex Forsythe in second and Tiffany Rauch in third.

Andrea Arnold took first place in the 400 and was followed by Lindsey Hufnagel and Alexis Hull. Hufnagel also had a personal-best performance in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.92.

Western Michigan heads to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the 2013 Indoor MAC Championships at Eastern Michigan next Friday.
