Football Comes Up Short in OT Thriller

Box Score YSPILANTI, Mich. - Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan battle, in typical rivalry game fashion, into overtime as the Broncos fall in a 35-32 thriller on Saturday afternoon.

WMU captured its largest fourth quarter lead of the season when Andrew Haldeman made good on a 25-yard field goal with 6:51 remaining in regulation to put his team up, 29-21.  Six minutes later, the Eagles' Brogan Roback found Dustin Creel from 10 yards out for the touchdown and then Roback scored on a Ryan Brumfield halfback pass for the two-point conversion, forcing overtime.

It was the ninth overtime game in program history with the Broncos holding an even 4-4 mark in such games.  WMU and EMU had played in overtime once before, on Oct. 9, 1999, with the Broncos out on top in that game, 40-37.

Today it was the Eagles turn as Brumfield recorded the last four yards of his 148 on the day, carrying the ball into the end zone and EMU to victory.  WMU opened overtime with Haldeman's sixth made field goal of the day.

Haldeman went a career-high 6-for-6 on Saturday, making the most in a game since Mike Prindle made seven in a 42-7 win over Marshall on Sept. 29, 1984.

Western Michigan carried a 16-14 lead into halftime, its first of the season, when Haldeman made good on a 30-yard attempt with 18 seconds left before the break.  His longest of the day, and of the season, came at the 7:16 mark of the first quarter, when he nailed a 48-yard attempt to give WMU a 10-7 lead.

The Broncos scored their first opening quarter touchdown just over a minute and a half prior to the field goal when Brian Fields ran over the EMU defense from seven yards out, answering the Brumfield's 23-yard score on the Eagles' opening drive.  Fields would finish with 45 yards on 17 carries, 12 yards behind Dareyon Chance who led WMU with 57 yards on the ground.

Western Michigan had its best day throwing the ball despite the 21 mph winds in Rynearson Stadium.  Zach Terrell went 24-for-39 for a career-high 348 yards and one touchdown.  It was the first 300-yard passing game of Terrell's young career and the first for the Broncos since Alex Carder's 328 against EMU on Nov. 17, 2012.

Terrell's lone TD came on a crossing route to Corey Davis that went for 70 yards after the catch and run.  It was the second TD of 70 yards or more for Davis as he now has 873 yards this season, a new freshman record at WMU.  Davis also set a new mark for 100-yard receiving games by a freshman with his fifth, going for 112 yards on just six catches.  He is 117 yards from becoming only the fourth freshman in Mid-American Conference history to reach 1,000 yards receiving.

Kendrick Roberts had his first career 100-yard receiving game, going for 106 on four grabs, including a catch of 59 yards.  It was the sophomore's second reception of over 50 yards in 2013.

Defensively, Austin Lewis made his first career start and made the most of it, amassing 10 total tackles to lead the Broncos.  Ronald Zamort now has 16 pass break ups in 2013, tying him with Londen Fryar (2007) for the second most in a season.

WMU regroups and heads back to Kalamazoo with a showdown against Central Michigan looming on Nov. 16 (12 p.m.).  It will be senior day as the Broncos look to make it three straight in the Battle for the Cannon.
